Kandahar, a city in southern Afghanistan was hit last night with rockets. At least three rockets were launched into the airport, causing all flights to be cancelled.
According to Airport Chief, Massoud Pashtun, three rockets were launched at the airport the previous night and two of them hit the runway. He further stated that work was in progress for the repair of the runway and hopefully, the airport would in full operation, later on Sunday.
The Taliban have begun assaults on the outskirts of Kandahar for weeks on end, putting fears in the minds of the people of possible capture of the city by insurgents. The attack on the airport showed signs of the Taliban getting closer to conquer two other provincial cities: Herat in the west and Lashkar Haha in the south of Kandahar.
The insurgents have gained control over the main border crossings during the final stages of the withdrawal of the United States military.
The capture of the major cities would take their attack to another level and increase concerns of the citizens, of the inability of the army to protect them and resist enemy attacks.
