The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) have proposed to go on an indefinite strike on Monday, 2nd August, 2021.

According to the President of the association, Dr. Okhuaihesuyi Uyilawa, the strike is unavoidable because the 113 days ultimatum issued earlier to the Federal and State Governments on the welfare, training and service delivery of resident doctors, has expired.

The unanimous decision to go on this strike from 8am on Monday, was reached at the just concluded 2021 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Umuahia, Abia State.

The association claimed that the Federal Government did not fulfill their promises to resident doctors in terms of the disbursement of MRT funds after inputting it in the supplementary budget, the non-payment of Minimum Wage Consequential Adjustment to members, failure to review the Five Thousand Naira (#5,000) hazard allowance, non-remittance of dues and non-payment of the COVID-19 inducement allowance to members of the association.

NARD further accused state governments like Imo, Abia, Ondo and Ekiti of owing resident doctors their salaries for seven, nineteen, four and two months respectively. The association lamented the poor condition of resident doctors in those states. It showed a deep concern over the inability of most state governments to domesticate the Medical Residency Training (MRT) Act 2017. The association further applauded Delta, Benue and Lagos States for adopting the Act and advised other states to do the same.
