The nation’s power grid that is operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Oshogbo, Osun state, has collapsed again, leaving parts of Nigeria without power supply.

The grid collapsed at around 12:25pm on Wednesday, 28th July, 2021. This makes it 128 times that the power grid has failed since the privatization of the nation’s power sector in 2013.

The blame has been placed on the analogue systems being used by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), the umbrella body of distribution companies. However, some distribution companies have notified their customers and have urged them to exercise patience, promising that power would be restored as soon as the load allocation improves.

A notice by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company had read: “We have been unable to serve our customers in Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states as well as a significant portion of the Federal Capital Territory”. According to them, they were allocated only 20MW as against the 400MW they had been receiving recently.

The Executive Secretary at the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), Dr Joy Ogaji, lamented the deplorable state of power infrastructure and the financial setbacks they get from the chaos the collapse of power grid creates in hospitals, airports and other places where power is solely dependent on.

This continuous collapse of the power grid has left a distrust in the power sector, as most corporate bodies now rely only on power-generators, to break loose from the impacts of incessant power supply on their equipment.
